Ways in which making a living on the internet in 2011 is like making a living in a record store in the early 90’s:
- a whole bunch of super pretentious people also make their living there.
- there’s not much money in it. Unless you’re the guy who fixes the Coke machine in the back room. I hear that guy gets paid like $20 an hour.
- it is entirely possible (and some might say encouraged) to get by using zero social skills in lieu of an encyclopedic knowledge of minutia on topics that most people have never nor will ever hear of.
- everybody has a crush on the new girl. everybody.
- all the things you truly love will ultimately never be accepted by the masses.
- neverending legions of 13 year olds come in all the time asking for terrible things and it is essentially your unwritten job explaining to them that there is so much more out there for them to enjoy.
- on breaks everyone reads Vonnegut paperbacks and chain smokes and talks shit about everyone else who works there.
